CAPS United midfielder Lloyd Njaliwa has set out the club’s intentions in plain terms, saying the mission this season is nothing short of winning the league title.
He stressed that there is a shared understanding within the squad about what is at stake, and that every match is being treated as part of a wider push for silverware rather than isolated results.
“The whole team knows what our mission is. Our mission is to be the champions and it begins with [winning] these games,” he told The Herald.
Njaliwa pointed to a change in mindset within the camp, noting that the focus has shifted from rebuilding phases of recent seasons to competing at the top end of the table.
He said the team is now approaching each fixture with a winning mentality, aware that consistency in collecting maximum points will be key in the title race.
“For the past few years [the club] has not been doing well, but now it’s a new chapter, every game we take it as a new game and our mission is to win those games.”
CAPS United face Bulawayo Chiefs who are coming from a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Chicken Inn, in a low-key Bulawayo Derby. This was their second win this season and they need more to recover from their slow take-off.
Njaliwa added that CAPS United are not allowing themselves to be distracted by reputation or history when preparing for matches, instead treating each opponent with equal seriousness in the pursuit of results.
“Every game is a new game, as I said. So, we have to play and win and make our supporters happy. We know what they want is a win, so we always have to make sure we win,” he said.
Lloyd Njaliwa opened his account for CAPS United in decisive fashion, scoring the goal that proved crucial in a 2-1 win over Highlanders in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
The Malawi international striker struck in the 65th minute to double CAPS United’s advantage, delivering what turned out to be the match-winning contribution as the Green Machine held on to secure a significant result.
CAPS United opened the season with a significant upturn in form, collecting 22 points from their first stretch of matches three times better than their return at the same stage last season, when they had managed just seven.
The Green Machine have suffered only one defeat, against Ngezi Platinum Stars, and recorded a single draw with FC Hunters.
Despite those early setbacks, they have responded strongly to stay in the title conversation, showing greater consistency compared to the previous campaign.
