Highlanders pay for costly error as Musona punishes Mhlanga mistake

Highlanders’ defeat in the Uhuru Cup was decided in a single, costly moment, and Mongameli Tshuma did not shy away from addressing it, even as he tried to shield his teammate from the full weight of the fallout.

The turning point came from a lapse in possession deep in Highlanders’ half. Shepherd Mhlanga, attempting to switch play to the far side, underhit his pass.

Knowledge Musona read the danger instantly, stepped in, and punished the error with the composure of a seasoned forward, guiding his left foot finish past a stranded goalkeeper for what proved to be the decisive goal.

Tshuma was honest in his post match comments, pointing to a costly error that led to the goal but quickly stressed collective responsibility.

“Our own player passed the ball to Musona and he finished it. It was a mistake, but we are a team, we lost as a team,” he said.

However, the forward struck a more measured tone, framing the moment as part of a broader learning curve for a side still finding its rhythm.

“Everyone wanted a win, but unfortunately we lost the game. We will try to correct our mistakes at training. Like the mistake that resulted in a goal, we will correct that so that next game we do not make the same mistake.”

Despite the disappointment, Tshuma’s form continues to stand out, with the young forward emerging as one of Highlanders’ most promising attacking options, showing sharp movement, intent in the final third

The young forward stressed that both individual development and team improvement will depend on staying focused on the basics.

“So far, so good. I believe if you work hard, the results will come. Nothing comes easy. I just want to encourage everyone to keep working hard and your time will come,” he added.

Mongameli Tshuma created a clear first-half chance with a precise pass to set up Reason Sibanda, but the forward missed with the goal open, a moment that proved costly. After the break, Highlanders pushed forward and came close through Isaac Ngoma, but Scottland goalkeeper Prince Tafiremutsa made a key save as Bosso enjoyed a strong spell.

Scottland, however, stayed patient and took their chance when a defensive error gifted Knowledge Musona a simple finish inside the box for the only goal of the game. Highlanders pressed late, but Scottland held firm to secure a 1–0 win.

At the final whistle, Scottland celebrated another piece of silverware. For Highlanders, it was a familiar story of fine margins. A missed opportunity for Reason Sibanda and Mhlanga, who joined Highlanders FC earlier this year from FC Platinum, experienced how unforgiving top level football can be, where a single misplaced pass is often enough to decide a match.
