Chirewa sees goals, victory and group-stage progress as Warriors eye Egypt showdown

Tawanda Chirewa has turned his focus squarely to Zimbabwe’s AFCON opener against Egypt, stressing that his mindset is firmly fixed on the first fixture.

The winger insists he is not looking too far down the road, instead visualising the opening clash as the moment that can shape the Warriors’ campaign.

Chirewa backs himself to make an impact, pictures Zimbabwe getting a good result, and believes the team has what it takes to push through the group stage as anticipation builds ahead of kickoff.

“I haven’t really dreamed that far ahead. That’s a long way ahead. That’s at the end of January. All I’m thinking about is that first game against Egypt, trying to visualise that.

“With Egypt, I’ve seen me scoring, I’ve seen us winning, and us going through the group stage. It’s exciting times ahead, and I just can’t wait to get things rolling.”

Zimbabwe and Egypt have met twice at the Africa Cup of Nations, both in the group stage. Egypt won 2–1 at AFCON 2004 in Tunisia and edged Zimbabwe 1–0 at AFCON 2019 in Cairo. Zimbabwe were competitive in both matches but came away empty-handed on each occasion.
