Tawanda Chirewa says earning an AFCON call-up is the realization of a lifelong dream, while the 22-year-old midfielder has also fought his way back into the Wolves squad, winning the trust of club coach Rob Edwards.
“I have been preparing for this moment my whole career. I am ready to take on the best teams in Africa and make a name for myself on the continent.
“This is a dream come true for me. I’ve always wanted to play for Zimbabwe and now I’m getting the chance to do so at the AFCON. I am feeling confident and focused.
Chirewa is part of Mario Marinica’s 28-man squad named on Monday, a selection that signaled a bold shift, with vice-captain Marshall Munetsi, Jordan Zemura and Terrence Dzvukamanja all missing out through injury.
Chirewa arrives as the Warriors’ highest-level club player and one of their most decisive performers.
He scored in competitive matches against South Africa and Nigeria, then added another in a friendly against Algeria, enough to keep him on Marinica’s radar even after missing the Qatar match.
“I am proud to be part of this talented squad. We are a team with a lot of heart and determination, and I am excited to see what we can achieve together,” he said.
Marinica has leaned heavily into youth and intensity this year, and Chirewa sits at the center of that reset as Zimbabwe chase a fresh identity heading into AFCON 2025.
