The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Patrice Motsepe has used Tawanda Maswanhise’s solo goal against South Africa as a case study for the depth of untapped talent in Zimbabwean football, describing the moment as one that should sharpen the attention of scouts across the global game.
The CAF president used the moment to call attention to the broader scouting landscape, suggesting that players like Maswanhise are part of a pool that is still being fully discovered.
“There’s this player who got an incredible goal against South Africa (at AFCON) who’s playing in Scotland.”
“We must go where he comes from and we will find others there because the talent is enormous.”
Maswanhise’s intervention came in a tightly contested match when he collected possession in the final third and drove at the South African defence.
A quick shift of balance took him past Sphephelo Sithole before he accelerated through traffic, bypassing Teboho Mokoena and Mbekezeli Mbokazi in successive moments of close control.
Even as the space narrowed inside the penalty area, he remained composed, guiding a low finish beyond Ronwen Williams to complete a move defined by control under pressure and sharp attacking instinct.
Motsepe said the goal reflected a broader reality about Zimbabwe’s football ecosystem, arguing that the country continues to produce players capable of operating at the highest level, even if they are not always immediately visible on the global radar.
He pointed to the importance of expanding scouting structures and recognising emerging talent earlier.
The CAF president also referenced established figures such as Khama Billiat, using their careers as evidence that Zimbabwean football has long produced players capable of influencing major fixtures on the continental stage.
“This country has produced incredible football players; I mean Khama Billiat was a champion of the continent in 2016 when Mamelodi Sundowns were champions of Africa and it must also be part of the dream of every Zimbabwean youngster to play for the national team.”
The performance saw Maswanhise named by CAF among the three brightest prospects at the tournament.
