Mario Marinica has moved to steady the narrative around Marshall Munetsi, insisting the midfielder remains firmly in his long term plans amid growing scrutiny over his omission from the AFCON squad.
Sources indicate the situation is more nuanced than initially presented, with Marinica maintaining that Munetsi is still considered a key component in the Warriors midfield structure, even as questions linger over communication breakdowns between player and technical team.
Marinica struck a conciliatory tone, reiterating that selection is rooted in availability, fitness and commitment, while leaving the door open for reintegration ahead of the June international window.
“First of all, Marshall remains a very important player for the national team. As a coach I will always want the best Zimbabwean players to be available, and Marshall is certainly one of them,” Marinica said.
Behind the scenes, efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions, with the coach confirming a formal meeting has been requested to address unresolved issues.
“In the spirit of clarity and unity, we have requested a meeting with Marshall Munetsi so that we can sit down, speak openly and get to the bottom of any misunderstandings that may be there. These matters are always best handled through direct, respectful and honest communication.”
“The most important thing is to keep the conversation positive and focused on what’s best for the player, team and nation,” he added.
Marinica, however, has been clear in his messaging, the national team setup remains open, competitive and inclusive, with selection hinging on alignment between player, staff and the broader objectives of the squad.
“My message is simple. My door is always open. The national team belongs to all Zimbabweans and every player who is committed to representing the country will always be welcomed,” Marinica affirmed.
The technical team’s position suggests Munetsi’s absence was influenced by player welfare concerns, amid indications he may have been carrying a knock, a claim that contrasts with reports the midfielder felt fit and ready to feature. That disconnect appears to have fueled uncertainty, with Munetsi believed to have been left frustrated by a lack of direct follow up communication.
