Maswanhise one goal away from 20 as Motherwell star eyes golden boot

Tawanda Maswanhise is firing on all cylinders for Motherwell, sitting just one strike away from hitting 20 goals in all competitions this season.

Maswanhise, who joined the club in August 2024 from Leicester’s academy, has 14 league goals and five in cup competitions.

Maswanhise ended his brief goal drought in style over the weekend, playing a starring role as Motherwell doubled their lead against St Mirren.

In the 27th minute, Maswanhise latched onto a perfectly timed through ball, only to be brought down by the onrushing goalkeeper inside the box. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, triggering a tense VAR review to check his onside position.

After a two-minute wait, the decision stood, and Maswanhise calmly fired home from the spot, marking his 19th goal of the season and giving the Steelmen a commanding lead before the break.

“Winning the penalty and then converting it,  that’s the kind of responsibility I enjoy. It shows I can create the moment and finish it myself,” he said.

Maswanhise said that every time he steps onto the pitch, he knows goals can change games, adding that in Scotland chances are rare, so you have to make every opportunity count.

“Every time I step onto the pitch, I remind myself that goals change games,” Maswanhise.

“In Scotland, chances are limited, so when one comes, you have to make it count,” he added.

Linked mid-season with Celtic and other European clubs, Maswanhise remains at Motherwell, with manager Jens Berthel Askou admitting they won’t be able to keep the forward forever. For now, each goal brings him closer to history and a potential big move, with 30 in a season not beyond his reach.
