Zimbabwe captain Marvellous Nakamba has issued a clear warning to their Group opponents ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the Warriors are arriving with intent, not excuses.
Zimbabwe open their campaign on Monday against heavyweight opposition, drawn alongside seven-time champions Egypt national football team, South Africa national football team and Angola national football team.
Nakamba said football is competitive and every group is tough, but the focus must be on preparation, strong game plans and fighting for the country rather than worrying about opponents.
“Football is all about competition, and I think every group is difficult. We are facing Angola in the first match then Angola before finishing against South Africa, but I think we have to focus on ourselves, have a perfect game plan and fight for the country,” he said.
While few have tipped Zimbabwe to progress from the group, Nakamba says the Warriors are not travelling to Morocco to make up the numbers, but to compete, challenge and surprise.
“We go to Morocco with humility, discipline, and determination. We are not travelling as tourists. We are travelling as competitors.”
In an international friendly that ended full-time, Egypt edged Nigeria 2–1, as the Warriors now turn their focus to the start of their AFCON campaign against the Pharaohs on Monday.
