Marvelous Nakamba is still waiting to establish himself at Sheffield Wednesday, with manager Henrik Pedersen pointing to competition for places rather than form as the main reason.
Nakamba, who joined the Owls on a short-term deal after leaving Luton Town, has made just two appearances since arriving on deadline day. Despite making his debut off the bench against Swansea City, where he played close to 30 minutes, he has struggled for consistent game time.
The Zimbabwe international, who is set for national duty during the upcoming break, has largely been limited to cameo roles, including a late substitute appearance against Ipswich Town. He was again left on the bench in the recent 3-1 defeat to Hull City.
Pedersen has kept faith with a settled midfield, with Jarvis Thornton, Jaden Heskey and Svante Ingelsson retaining their places, leaving Nakamba to wait for an opening as he looks to break into the starting lineup.
“There has been a big competition [for places],” Pedersen told The Star. “Svante, he has been one of our absolute best players.
“Jaden has been very strong. Jarvis, as a young guy, he has also been strong. So it has been difficult for him.
“But Marv is a fantastic guy, and he has trained really well, and he tries to do all the right things. I’m sure there will also be more playing time for him.”
Wednesday will resume their campaign on the other side of the international break with a Good Friday trip to the bet365 Stadium to face Stoke City. That will mark their first of seven games between now and the finish line.
