Mwaruwari: Everyone didn’t want me here, that’s a fact

Highlanders Coach, Benjani Mwaruwari did not hold back when addressing delays surrounding a player’s permit, expressing frustration at the lack of progress from within the club.

Asked for an update, Mwaruwari admitted he was still in the dark.

“On that one, I haven’t heard anything from the club. Normally by now I should have the answer,” he said.

He went further, suggesting the situation has dragged on unnecessarily.

“Now I have to say it in public because people will be asking me. Because they are not doing enough, I think, for this to happen. This boy has been here waiting for the permit for the past one month. Now, as someone in the club, I think they don’t want this to happen.”

Mwaruwari also opened up on his own challenges, hinting at internal resistance since his arrival.

“I’m sorry to say this, but I have to be open with some of the things that are happening. I’ve been waiting in difficult conditions. Everyone didn’t want me here. That’s a fact.”

Highlanders’ 20-year wait for a league title highlights ongoing leadership struggles at the club, with repeated failures blamed on poor administration. Despite a strong 2023 title challenge under Baltemar Brito, including a 19-match unbeaten run, the effort fell apart due to lack of executive support. Brito later criticised the club’s leadership before eventually leaving.

However, The Undertaker is determined  to keep fighting to guide the team in the right direction despite feeling he is not getting enough support in his role.

“For those who don’t want me, it’s okay, but I will fight to make sure this team will go in the right direction.”

“I know this team is in my heart, and those who feel like it’s not, it’s unfortunate, but now I think it’s high time I need to come and say it. So, I needed the best support, but I feel I don’t have it.”

Highlanders extended their winless run to five matches in the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after a goalless draw with FC Platinum, dropping 10 points from their opening five games.

Bosso were hit by late team changes and injuries, including the early loss of Mvelo Khoza, while missing key players Mongameli Tshuma and Reward Muza.

FC Platinum had the better early chances but couldn’t convert, and Highlanders also missed opportunities through Prince Ndlovu and Benjamin Adeogun.

Despite chances for both sides in the second half, neither team managed a breakthrough, leaving Highlanders 12th and FC Platinum 9th on the table.
