Motherwell Manager vows to keep Tawanda Maswanhise amid transfer interest

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou has insisted the club will fight to retain Zimbabwe forward Tawanda Maswanhise this month, despite growing attention from top clubs.

Maswanhise scored his 16th goal of the season against Ross County at Fir Park on Saturday, a strike witnessed by Celtic boss Martin O’Neill, sparking speculation over a possible move.

“Am I calm about it? Yeah. There was also interest in our players in the last window.

“That interest has been growing and will hopefully grow until we find the right moment with the player to move them on.

“That moment is NOT now.

Askou confirmed no formal bids have been received and stressed that Motherwell are under no pressure to sell.

“We’re halfway through a fantastic season so far, but there’s still room for improvement and that’s what we’re going to chase.

“We can’t keep Tawanda forever, and we shouldn’t keep him forever.

“But there’s no plan for any of our players to be moving on now, and there has been no-one coming with a big wish on that.

“On the contrary, everyone is really committed and excited about what we’re doing, and that’s the track we’re taking.”

However Jens says Motherwell will consider any big offer for Tawanda Maswanhise if it comes in.

“That is something we will discuss, if that happens,

The Dane added that the club’s position was strengthened by last summer’s sale of Lennon Miller, allowing Motherwell to focus on stability rather than rushing decisions.

“Rushing things might be good right now, but in the long-term it’s sometimes better to be a little bit cool.

“We have no plans to make a big rebuild now.”

Tawanda Maswanhise has been in sensational form this season, finding the net in every competition he has featured in.

The Zimbabwe international has scored in the Premier Sports Cup, the William Hill Premiership, the Scottish Cup, and even on the continental stage at the Africa Cup of Nations.
